Municipal operations are frequently siloed across proprietary vendor platforms. We break down these silos by deploying open-source, standard-compliant context data layers using the FIWARE ecosystem. By mapping municipal infrastructure to standardized smart data models, we turn fragmented sensor feeds into a unified digital twin of the territory.
From provisioning Orion Context Brokers to setting up IoT Agents that translate native LoRaWAN or MQTT payloads into ETSI NGSI-LD format, our engineering approach ensures that your smart territory platform remains open, interoperable, and fully compliant with European procurement directives.
Context Data & Standardization
Our integrations focus on maintaining a clean, real-time representation of all urban entities. We prioritize native compliance with international specifications:
- NGSI-LD Standard Compliance: We model all systems using the ETSI ISG CIM NGSI-LD standard, ensuring clean semantic relationships and JSON-LD context references for every urban entity.
- Smart Data Models Conformity: We adopt standard data models for street lighting (
Streetlight), air quality (AirQualityObserved), and waste management (WasteContainer), making the data instantly interoperable with external municipal portals. - Unified Context Broker Routing: We configure Context Brokers (Orion, Scorpio, or Stellio) to manage entity state, subscriptions, and notifications, providing a single query interface for all northbound applications.
Extremadura Smart City Case Study
We designed and delivered the core smart city integration layer serving multiple municipal networks in Extremadura, Spain. The architecture handles real-time telemetry from thousands of urban devices:
- Smart Lighting Control: Connecting street lighting control cabinets via MQTT, translating status telemetry to NGSI-LD, and enabling remote dimming commands based on ambient light sensors.
- Air Quality & Waste Telemetry: Deploying LoRaWAN gateways to collect particulate matter ($PM_{2.5}$, $PM_{10}$) and waste bin fill levels, routing messages through FIWARE IoT Agents to update entity states.
- Time-Series Persistence: Setting up Cygnus connector pipelines to aggregate context updates, sinking data to a clustered TimescaleDB instance for historical analytics with sub-second query execution.
Let's build systems that don't break.
